Recommended reading: Charles Wilson’s New York Times piece on two competitors in last week’s New York Marathon: Nadine McNeil and her son, Tyler. McNeil, who doesn’t have use of her right arm or right leg, raced in a handcycle. Her son, who is autistic, ran.
The closeness of their relationship and their interdependence is moving. Athletics has been a sort of savior to both of them but as Wilson writes, “Neither would have ever made it to this year’s starting line without the other.”
